So finally seeing some progress in the metric I have been pushing. We have around 72% of our locations participating which is the highest we’ve had all year! To give you an idea, we’ve been hovering around 55% participation since January started. So it is definitely good progress.

 

But it can be better.

 

This progress has been brought by pushing sales from a top down approach. Meaning we’ve changed the comp plan for our managers to ensure they are pushing this metric. I however feel this should not be the main push to get our reps to move on this metric.

Write it down!

 

Writing down actions items is one of the most important steps in getting things done. For your team that you are leading, it’s a great accountability tool! Just writing it down won’t give you a huge increase in productivity though – but it will help some.

 

Share it!

 

The second item that helps in accomplishing your action items is sharing what you’ve written down. The write and share approach is such a great combination, but there is a science behind this approach that is artful!

 

I have created a template for us to use at work that I want to trial as I know it will increase the productivity of our field reps just by asking them to write down simple items, how they will attain them and to share them with their supervisor and peers. To make sure this is effective we would have to train the managers on how to do this. Meaning this would be better off being a top down approach; something normally termed as “train the trainer”.

 

Overall I am happy we are at 70+% participation for this metric company wide. Now the real task for me is speaking with my original boss that brought me out here and let him know that I will (for the moment not be returning to the field as originally planned – unless I  can manage my current projects from the field, which would be too much to effectively handle).
