A Fork in the River

I was originally planning to post on Friday about the results for the week and how everything is progressing, but then a new variable came into play Friday; I was offered to go back into the field in a managerial position and being highly considered for the next promotion. It’s an enticing offering because I would be making more than my current role and I would be able to implement my project to facilitate proper habits how I see fit…

There’s always a but

But there’s a few reasons why I am turning it down. My old boss (really great person, leader and mentor) wants me to make the transition back to the field within a couple of weeks. The original plan when I made the transition to help at our corporate office was that I would have the ability to go back to the field. Personally I feel at home in the field. I know it. I excel in it. And when you want to have a bench full of stars, you go after some of the best. That was a condition for me, as I personally do not enjoy the office environment.

But things are a bit different. I am not the type to back down from challenges and the current projects I’m working on are more sales driven than the original operations projects they tasked me with. One of the main reasons as well that I am going to stay in my current role is the impact of the projects I am working on. As much as I enjoy the field more and loathe being a desk jockey, the fact is our company is growing at a fast pace and we need to make changes to ensure we stay ahead of the curve when it comes to our culture.

After all it’s not the big holes that sink ships… it’s the small holes that do…

Patience is a habit I’m having to readily use more often than not these days. The instant change we see at our company (as with any company) is not instant. Instant is relative in this case. There are processes and procedures that we have to work with. More so the habits in place need to be created and/or modified to ensure there is a solid foundation to build on.

I would not be able to move in this direction on my own, as making changes at this level means having the right support to help push the changes forward. This means networking and making friends with those that can help. Making friends in the business sense is not the same as making friends outside the work area. I have touched base with others in the office and listened to what they are passionate about at work. It’s easy to see who’s wanting to make a change and who is comfortable with the status quo. You have to remember that you may not always have the right plan. Just because this may be true doesn’t mean that your objectives are in the wrong direction. Sometimes you need the right people who share a similar vision in your corner. And that means being in theirs helping with their initiatives as well. This is great to do especially when those objectives are complimentary to your own!

So that’s where we are at currently. An offer that had me highly considering it. Working with others to help push our objectives forward to the right people/departments.

As for my own current projects, I’m waiting on the numbers to come in to see how we are doing. The good news is from the data gathered so far, we are seeing higher participation and numbers being consistent. The end game is keeping the numbers consistent and close to the actual goal. I’ll keep you posted with what I can.
